The four modules in this intervention guide are intended to support working with parents who have been responsible for physically, sexually or emotionally abusive actions towards their children, have seriously neglected their care or have exposed children to domestic violence, and address:how abusive and neglectful parenting affects children’s emotional and physical development: psychoeducationhow parents cope with stress, and the link with abusive and neglectful parentinghelping parents cope with negative perceptions of their childrenclarifying, sharing and reconciling the impact of abusive and neglectful parenting.The modules are intended to support direct work with parents, but the presence and role of children and young people may be key to the process. Younger, pre-verbal children may enact, or play out; older children may draw or play, providing communications about their experiences. This can trigger discussions about the impact of these events. Modules focusing on children and young people’s emotional and traumatic responses need to be undertaken before the final family module when the abuse or neglect can be acknowledged, responsibility for it can be taken, and there can be reconciliation.
